A fire at a Schoharie County pharmaceutical company sparked a hazmat situation on Wednesday.

According to Middleburgh Fire Chief Jerry Wayman, it started around 4:10 p.m. at Dr. Reddy's Laboratories on Route 145. He says when they arrived, they could smell a plastic odor coming from the building.

Since there were chemicals in the building, that sparked their evacuation plan with a two-mile radius. It was later downgraded to a shelter in place.

Wayman says a small fire was contained to a mechanical room. He also says no hazardous materials were in the room. The shelter in place was lifted and the road reopened.

However, there is smoke and water damage in the facility.

“They’re going to have to do some work here," Wayman said. "I don’t know if they’ll continue here for a while or not. That’s up to the code enforcement and the company.”

Wayman says everyone was checked out and there were no injuries. He also says the fire may have started from the boiler but that remains under investigation.
