An agreement has been reached to settle a lawsuit filed by inmates of the Albany County Jail who claim they were abused after being transferred there from Rikers Island.
Multiple people with knowledge of settlement discussions told Spectrum News that the settlement will be voted on by the Albany County Legislature on Sept. 9 and expect it to be approved.
The settlement is worth $1 million and will be paid by Albany County and New York City.
According to the federal lawsuit, four inmates say they were put into isolation for 23 hours a day and were beaten and sexually assaulted by corrections officers.
They claim they were brought upstate to skirt solitary confinement laws in New York City, which did away with solitary housing units for inmates under the age of 22 in 2015.
Spectrum News reached out to Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple and attorneys for the plaintiffs but did not hear back.
