The legislature passed a one year moratorium on new approvals or permits for solid waste treatment facilities near the Hudson River.

This all comes as the future of the Dunn Landfill and the building of the Rensselaer biotech facility were in question.

Opponents of the plant proposed for the former BASF site were calling for an independent environmental impact study. That facility would convert some trash into fuel; something advocates say would only help reduce landfill waste.

Now, cleanup efforts continue along the Hudson for toxic chemicals and by products from the former facility.

The legislature saying it will work on a more comprehensive measure, including an amendment requiring state and local solid waste proposals to have approved permits, before breaking ground.
