The Board of Trustees at Nurses Middle College voted Monday to close the school at the end of this school year due to declining enrollment.
Right now, only 70 students are enrolled in ninth and 10th grades.
“After careful consideration, we determined that closure at the end of the year was the only viable path forward,” said Susan Birkhead, chair of the board of Nurses Middle College Capital Region. “Given the low student enrollment, we simply could not continue operations without sacrificing our mission and the high-quality education our students deserve.”
The vote took place Monday afternoon on its campus on Washington Avenue in Rensselaer.
Students will have a chance this spring to visit Capital Region hospitals and nursing schools to gain insight into careers in health care.
School leaders said they will help students find educational options for the 2025-26 school year. Representatives from three local charter schools — Green Tech, Albany Leadership and KIPP Capital High School — will visit campus this week.
