The Bills with a short and light practice late Sunday afternoon.
That setting not the best for making observations, so this will be more news and notes than normal.
Dawkins Has Long Road Ahead
Dion Dawkins participated in practice for the first time this training camp after getting activated from the COVID list last Thursday.
Dawkins worked with the offensive line during individual drills, but did not participate in team work.
Prior to practice Sean McDermott said that they would take it one day at a time with Dawkins. The Bills head coach later added that the left tackle is not close to being where he needs to be to play.
Spencer Brown got the start in place of Dawkins during Friday night's preseason opener in Detroit.
Other Injury Notes
Stefon Diggs was out once again with a knee injury. McDermott said there is not currently concern that the injury will keep Diggs out come the regular season.
Emmanuel Sanders was back out there. He has been in and out of practice with a foot injury.
Zack Moss was working off to the side with the training staff with a lot of tape on the back part of his right leg. He has been out with a hamstring injury since early last week.
McDermott said there is hope Moss will be able to play Saturday against the Bears, but must show proper improvement over the next 3-4 days.
Vernon Butler was seen on the field during team work, his first action since leaving last Saturday's practice inside the stadium with a head injury.
Tommy Sweeney was seen on the sidelines with a boot on his left foot.
Tre'Davious White missed practice for personal reasons.
Up and Down O
The 11-on-11 portion of practice had some good, bad, and ugly in it for the Bills offense.
Taron Johnson nearly had an interception of Josh Allen right off the bat, but it went off his hands and to the ground.
From there, Allen locked in and was gain chunks of yards to Jake Kumerow, Gabriel Davis, and Emmanuel Sanders, who once again was a top target with Diggs and Cole Beasley not out there.
There were some issues with drops as well.
Devin Singletary had an Allen pass go off his hands and intercepted by a diving Micah Hyde. The throw was a tad high for the shorter Singletary.
Dawson Knox had boxed out Dane Jackson at the pylon, but could not make the catch with Jackson right on him.
The ugly was a rare bad snap by Mitch Morse, something I cannot remember seeing since he signed with the team a few years ago.
Again, this was a light day of work without pads, so the intensity and physicality not what you see on a normal day, so take that into account with some of what went on today.
Hughes Embracing Teaching Role
Jerry Hughes says he is slowly getting back to full go after dealing with a calf strain that kept him out of training camp until last week.
While he did not play Friday night, he was out there during 11-on-11 work this afternoon.
Hughes mentioned he was impressed with the performance of the defensive line against the Lions, especially the younger players in their first NFL action.
The team captain explained how he is passing along as much knowledge to those players as he can, just as Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis did for him and Mario Addison during their early years with the Colts.
This nugget about steering Rousseau to film of Mario Williams was very interesting, noting that it is hard for him to relate to the rookie at times because of the differences in their size and game. Williams was listed at 6'6" and 300 pounds. He had 43 sacks in four seasons with the Bills, 7th most in team history. He was a 1st team All-Pro selection in 2014.
