Longtime councilwoman Kim Ecklund has been sworn in as the new mayor of Jamestown.
Ecklund was sworn in during a ceremony on Monday. She is only the second woman to serve as mayor in nearly 30 years and the first Republican woman to do so.
"It's huge," Ecklund said. "Women have broken barriers as you can see in the world today, but it's been a little slow here. There is still some work to be done, and I think this raises the ceiling a little bit more for us and makes us be recognized and that we have a voice at the table."
Ecklund is one of five female mayors sworn in across New York this week.
