All that remains of this year's National Buffalo Wing Festival is a lot of cleaning up, and perhaps a little indigestion.

Although this weekend's event featured restaurants from all over the county, a local business showed why it's always a staple. The Anchor Bar holds a special spot in the hearts of wing lovers,  but even the restaurant's owners say they can't believe how popular their invention has become.

"Teressa invented the wing back in 1964, and I don't think she had this envisioned when she was doing it," Anchor Bar Franchise CO, Mark Dempsey said. "She was really just trying to satisfy some hungry guys and come up with an new menu item. So, it's pretty cool that it got this big."

During its 18-year run, the festival has served about five million wings.

This year, a business came all the way from Wyoming thanks to a little help from Josh Allen. The Bills quarterback got hooked on Double Dub's wings when he played college football at the University of Wyoming.

The company owner says he spent years trying to get into the festival. After four unsuccessful years, he called in a favor and Allen pulled strings to get him in.

"We went to the Buffalo Bills game on Thursday, everybody recognized us and everything," Double Dub's owner Trent Weitzel said. "We wore our Double Dub's attire and everyone was coming up to talk to us and everything, it was amazing."

The Double Dub's crew says the 1,500 mile trip was worth it. They won three trophies at the festival, including awards for their medium, extra hot and barbecue wing sauces.

The award for best wing went to Booty's Wings from Arizona. The owner, Andy LiButti, is a Rochester native. His restaurant in serves 50 original wing sauces.

Geoffrey Esper, the number-two ranked eater in the world, beat 2018 champion and number-one ranked Joey Chestnut in the wing eating contest on Sunday.

Esper scarfed down 281 wings in 12 minutes, while Chestnut ate down 276 wings. Sixth ranked competitive eater Miki Sudo came in third place with 221 wings.
