RALEIGH, N.C. -- A prolonged heat wave for the southeastern United States is set to begin at the end of this week and last well into next week.

If you have any outdoor work to get done and want to avoid the heat, Tuesday and Wednesday this week are your best bets.   High temperatures will just be in the 80s.  These will likely be the coolest afternoons we see for at least another week if not longer.

High temperatures will return to near 90 Thursday.  The mid to upper 90s are then forecast from Friday through at least early next week.  Some locations in the Sandhills may even be close to 100 Sunday and Monday.

It appears record highs could be broken each day from Friday through Memorial Day.
