NORTH CAROLINA -- With the weekend forecast calling for some Summer heat, there are some things we can do to help prevent heat related health issues for humans and pets.

  • Hydration is key. Drink plenty of water. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks. These can dehydrate you.
  • Outdoor animals will need access to plenty of cool fresh drinking water.
  • Hang out in the shade when possible. Direct sunlight can add another ten to fifteen degrees on how the heat impacts the body.
  • Make sure pets have a shady spot to help avoid the hot afternoon sun.
  • Wear light colored clothing.
  • Keep an eye on children and the elderly. It takes a while for our bodies to adjust to the heat. Here in North Caroline, late June through late August, can be some tough "hot" times.
  • Signs of heat exhaustion are: dizziness, excessive sweating, headache, pale skin, pulse that is weak or rapid, fainting
  • Frequent breaks in some A/C, or shade, is a good thing! Nothing wrong with hitting the mall for a bit, if you need a place to cool off.
  • NEVER leave children or pets in a vehicle even if you are thinking a "quick dash" into the store won't be a problem; it will.  LOOK before you lock!  It only takes a few minutes for a vehicle to reach a temperature of 100+ with hot days.  Cracking a window is not enough.

The key is to have fun in the sun. But, we want you to stay safe as we experience one of our first heat waves of the season.
