Meteorological winter runs from December through February, so how has our snowfall for the 2020-2021 winter season been so far?

What You Need To Know

  • Meteorological winter runs from  December 1 through February 28 (or 29th on Leap Year)
  •  Asheville is ahead of its normal, while Boone and Charlotte are behind

  • Boone has received snow as late as May 8 (1989)

Asheville has received 8 inches of snowfall, just above the average of 6.8 inches.

In Boone, 21.6 inches of snow have fallen, a decent amount but still 2.7 inches below the average to this point in the winter.

In Boone, both December and February underperformed in producing snow, while January delivered 14.5 inches of powder, the 10th snowiest January on record (since records began in 1979).

Charlotte has received all of 0.3 inches, more than 3 inches below average. The average snowfall for the Queen City is 3.4 inches from December 1 to February 23.

Of course, March is a fickle month. While meteorological winter may be wrapping up, snow isn't necessarily over.

Boone averages 5 inches of snowfall in March and has received snow as late as May. Asheville typically receives just under 2 inches in March, and Charlotte averages around a half-inch.
