Cold and blustery conditions have taken over around the region. Highs today will only be in the 40s, at best, in many mountain spots, and snow showers will become possible with time. I expect snow showers to really crank overnight tonight into tomorrow morning. The most favored areas above 4,000-5,000 feet in elevation could see over 5-6” of snow. Look for lighter snow totals below that elevation.
Many foothill areas will see a light freeze overnight with many higher elevation mountain spots well down into the 20s.
Some mountain snow showers could linger tomorrow, and then a final uptick in snow shower activity looks likely tomorrow night into early Saturday morning.
Everybody in the region will have gusty winds at times today, tonight and tomorrow. In the foothills, some occasional gusts to 30-35mph are possible, with gusts over 40-50mph possible in higher elevation mountain spots. With many western North Carolina trees weakened in the wake of Helene, sporadic power outages will remain possible.
