Hot summer days are here and you may be trying to beat the heat with a cool beverage.

So, what do you do when you forgot to chill your beer, soda, wine or juice?  How can you chill your beverages quickly?

The simple solution involves a container large enough to hold your canned or bottle beverages, a bag(s) of ice, a box of kosher salt, and water to fill your container.

  • Step one: Place your cans and/or bottles into your container.
  • Step two: Place a layer of ice over your bottles and cans and then add salt. Repeat this step with more ice and then more salt.
  • Step three: Add your water, fill your container and mix the ice, salt and water with your hand.  Oh yeah, you'll feel the cold fore sure!

In about 20 minutes, your drinks should be ice cold and ready to cool you down.

When water freezes, the molecules of water slow down and become fixed and form an ice crystal; the process starts at 32 degrees. Ions in the salt position themselves around the water molecules.

This stops the water molecules from slowing down and connecting, thereby stopping the formation of ice.

With the salt, the water temperature has to be much colder than freezing in order to form ice (FYI when the ice does form, at the colder temperatures, it is pretty much salt free). Because of the colder water, your warm drinks will quickly chill as the heat is rapidly drawn from them.

Hmmm the stuff you learn eh! Be safe with the Summer heat, and use this method to quickly chill your drinks!
