From hurricanes to ice storms, National Weather Association-certified meteorologist Jeff Crum has weathered every kind of storm in his 18 years at Spectrum News. Jeff was scared to death of severe storms as a kid. Now he informs and protects the Charlotte community during severe weather as our chief meteorologist.
One of his most memorable weather events was the February tornado outbreak that killed more than 20 people in the small town of Camilla, Georgia. Jeff was tracking the storms live on air, in the middle of the night, and asking people to call their neighbors and wake them up to the unfolding danger. The story haunts him to this day.
Jeff spent his early years in Ohio and moved to Chapel Hill as a teenager when his father, Dick Crum, became head coach of the University of North Carolina’s football team. In fact, the last time they won an ACC Championship title was under his father’s leadership. Jeff is a proud alum of NC's community college system and a vocal graduate of Appalachian State University. It’s not unusual to see him in the stands or on the streets of Boone during football season.
It’s no surprise that this weather man spends his free time outdoors. Jeff has hiked NC’s mountains, worked as a canoe instructor on the Cape Fear River, and taught hang-gliding along the Outer Banks. Jeff’s also a big foodie. While his favorite restaurant is The Waterman Fish Bar, he enjoys experimenting with cooking and baking. Cooking good BBQ (low and slow with a vinegar-based sauce) and catching up with family and friends is his favorite Southern tradition.
