NORTH CAROLINA -- An area of low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico will move to a location off the Carolina coast by tomorrow, and a shield of soaking rain on the northwest side of the low will continue to advance into and through the Carolinas over the next 36 hours.

  • Some rain will be a possibility this afternoon, but better rain chances settle in tonight and extend into much of tomorrow
  • For the Charlotte metro area, I expect 1-2" of rain in many areas
  • For the Wilmington area and our Sandhills zones, 1-3" of rain looks likely

Some rain will be a possibility this afternoon, but better rain chances settle in tonight and extend into much of tomorrow. It will take a little while for the rain to chew into this dry airmass we have entrenched around the region.

For the Charlotte metro area, I expect 1-2" of rain in many areas. Totals get lighter as you head further north with some mountain spots possibly failing to even get 0.50" of rain.

For the Wilmington area and our Sandhills zones, 1-3" of rain looks likely. Rainfall totals will be much lighter further north for the Outer Banks and Elizabeth City areas.

Christmas continues to look mild and dry.
