Despite cooler than normal temperatures for parts of May and June, 2020 is still on the way to being in the top 10 warmest years on record for North Carolina.

What You Need To Know

  • Through June 30, this year has been the 9th warmest year on record for the state.

  • Statewide average temperature data for North Carolina is available back to 1895.

  • This has also been the 4th wettest year on record for the state through the halfway point in 2020.

As of the half way point in the year, this year has been the ninth warmest year on record.  That is according to information recently released by the State Climate Office of North Carolina and is based on average temperature data across the state that dates back to 1895.

At the end of April, this had been the fourth warmest year for the state.  However, the year dropped a bit in those rankings thanks to the somewhat below normal temperatures in late spring into early summer.

A return to warmer than average temperatures through the rest of summer could certaintly send 2020 back up in the rankings for warmest years.  It may be tough to catch up with 2019 though unless we have very hot temperatures in late summer and early fall.

Last year was the warmest on record for North Carolina.

When it comes to rainfall, the first half of 2020 has been the 4th wettest year on record for the state.
