CHARLOTTE, N.C. –  Charlotte FC landed four players in Major League Soccer’s SuperDraft on Wednesday, including standout Clemson defender Hamady Diop.

The team traded up with St. Louis for the first overall pick to acquire Diop, who helped the Tigers win the NCAA Division I championship in 2021, Charlotte said in a news release.

Charlotte, which is entering its second MLS season, also selected forward Patrick Agyemang of the University of Rhode Island with the 12th pick in the first round.

Forward Nick Scardina from University of Washington and midfielder Andrew Privett of Penn State were chosen in the second and third rounds, respectively.

Diop, who played alongside Charlotte goalkeeper George Marks at Clemson, said he has been following the expansion club through its first year and is eager to join the team.

“It means a lot,” Diop said in a video conference, referring to Charlotte's selection. “It means that they value me and expect a lot from me.”

Diop, a 6-foot native of Dakar, Senegal, was named to the second-team All-ACC team in his sophomore and junior seasons.

More than 360 players were eligible in Wednesday’s draft

Charlotte FC kicks off its second season with a home game against New England on Feb. 25.
