CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The coronavirus may have ended the season prematurely for the Charlotte 49ers women's basketball team, but the players came up with a way to have a little fun in a tournament-style competition via Twitter.
Despite being scattered across the country, the players, including incoming recruits and alumni, shot videos of themselves making a trick shot.
The players were then pitted in a March Madness-style bracket competition and posted on the team's Twitter account, where fans voted on who advanced all the way to the finals.
The championship featured rising senior Mariah Linney against incoming freshman Jacee Busick.
Linney's behind-the-back, nothing-but-net heave while bouncing on the trampoline received 60 percent of the vote to win the title.
Pulling off the trick shot wasn't easy. In fact, Linney admitted it took her 24 attempts; and said it wasn't her first choice for her trick-shot entry.
"At first I was trying to do a front flip (on the trampoline), but that was not working," said Linney from her home in South Carolina. "I shot it regularly, but I didn't think that was good enough, and that's when I came up with the behind the back."
While the Trick Shot Challenge was a fun way to stay connected during the COVID-19 crisis, the team is looking forward to next season.
When the pandemic forced the season to end, the 49ers had won 20 games and had reached the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Tournament.
"I think all of us grew over last summer and that's what pushed us through to get that many wins," Linney told us. "We can have that carrying on into next season."
For now you can call Linney the 49ers Trick Shot Champion.
