While the details of his contract were not made available in the announcement, NFL.com previously reported that the former head coach of the Carolina Panthers reached a five year deal after meeting with Washington's owner, Daniel Snyder on Monday.
The announcement comes just a few weeks after Rivera told fans and media, "I will coach again," during an emotional farewell news conference.

In an official release from the Redskins, Snyder said, "After several meetings with Coach Rivera, it was clear he is the right person to bring winning football back to Washington D.C. He is widely respected around the league as a man of great integrity and has proven to be one of the finest coaches in the country."
As he is known on Twitter, @RiverboatRonHC commemorated the announcement by making an update to his official profile picture.
"While I love the storied history of the franchise, I am focused on the future and excited for the opportunity to win football games with this talented young team," Rivera said in a statement. "After meeting Dan Snyder, it was clear we are aligned in our passion for the game and he supports my vision to turn the team around. I look forward to surrounding myself with great people and getting to work."
Rivera and the Panthers went 5-7 in 2019 before he was fired in early December. Rivera, who oversaw three straight divisional title wins and a Super Bowl appearance, became the winningest head coach in the franchise's history after going 76-63-1 during his nine years with the organization.
The Redskins finished their 2019 season with a 3-13 record, which resulted in the firing of their head coach Jay Gruden and team president Bruce Allen.
