The Town of Kenly saw mass resignations Wednesday

The town's mayor said he has heard rumors that there were issues with police and the town manager

The mayor said there are plans for the town council to hold an emergency meeting to discuss next steps

Gibson has worked for the city for 21 years, he said in a social media post announcing the resignations Wednesday.

"I have put in my 2 weeks notice along with the whole police dept.," Gibson wrote. "The new manager has created an environment I do not feel we can perform our duties and services to the community."

Kenly Town Clerk Sharon Evans and Utility Clerk Christy Thomas also put in their notices to quit, according to Gibson.

Mayor H.L. Tooie Hales said he learned of the resignations last night. While he hasn't heard the specific problems that led to resignations, he said he heard rumors that some employees had issues with the town manager.

"I haven't heard a list of grievances yet," Hales said.

Town Manager Justine Jones started her job in June.

A sign posted on the front door of the Kenly Police Department Thursday said: "The town manager nor staff members are at liberty to provide any comments regarding the recent developments the town is currently experiencing."

The town council will hold an emergency meeting soon to discuss next steps, the mayor said. Hales hopes the meeting can happen before early next week.

Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell declined to comment on what will happen when Kenly's entire police force is no longer working in two weeks.

“I was getting ready for work this morning and saw it on the news and was like what?" said Steve Levick, owner of the Wheeler Dealer store in downtown Kenly, not far from city hall. "It's scary, definitely scary. I can't imagine it."

Kenly employs five full-time police officers and three part time.

Spectrum News 1 reached out to Jones for comment but has not yet heard back.
