CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Firefighters battling a blaze in the 300 block of East Morehead Street in Uptown Charlotte had the fire under control by late morning, officials said.
The fire broke out between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m., affecting businesses including the Morehead Tavern and prompting a three-alarm response.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Fire Department said the fire was under control about 10:30 a.m. and no injuries were reported.
“The dedication and quick action of our firefighters prevented what could have been a far worse outcome,” Charlotte Fire Chief Reginald Johnson said in a social media post. “Their ability to make decisive, tactical decisions under extreme conditions speaks to their training and professionalism.”
Investigators were working to find what caused the fire, which sent thick plumes of smoke into the morning sky.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police closed East Morehead Street between Euclid Avenue and South Tryon Street as crews fought the blaze.
