The man shot and killed by officers outside of a restaurant Saturday in Pineville has been identified.

Colton Floren, 24, police said, died at Atrium Main from injuries after being shot outside of Tavern 51 on Pineville-Matthews Road.

The shooting happened around 3:49 p.m.

Police said they responded to the area after someone reported a man wearing a hoodie armed with at least one 9mm handgun.

Once on the scene, police said the suspect, later identified as Floren, started to “advance towards the Officer,” who gave more than a dozen verbal commands for him to stop. When he did not stop, the officer shot the suspect two times, according to a statement.

The officer “rendered immediate aid to the subject,” the statement said, but Floren later died from injuries after being transported to the hospital.

As part of a standard procedure for these incidents, Pineville Police Department says the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation will conduction the criminal investigation, while Pineville Police conduct an internal affairs investigation.
