Helene is brought heavy rain and high winds to much of North Carolina Thursday and Friday, leaving devastating impacts across western North Carolina. Thousands remain without power, and some towns are still cut off from civilization because of mudslides, collapsed roads or other impacts.
Buncombe County was among the hardest hit areas, requiring some residents to evacuate because of flooding. Shelters continue to open for those who need a place to stay.
