A man shot by police in south Charlotte Sunday night has died, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Wednesday. An officer injured in the shooting, identified by police as Kenneth Kludy, was released from the hospital and is recovering from his injuries.

Police identified the man killed in the shooting as 37-year-old Nelson Javier Funez Reyes.

Sunday night

Officers pulled over a vehicle believed to be connected to an assault call when the suspect, later identified as Reyes, "produced a handgun, causing an exchange of gunfire," police said.

It happened at about 7:30 p.m. on Arrowood Road near Nation's Ford Road.

Kludy was struck "multiple times" in the shooting and taken to the hospital with serious injuries, and another officer went to the hospital as a precaution, police said. Reyes was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he later died, police said.

"Officer Kludy and Officer Joshua Heater have been identified as the officers who discharged their service weapons in this case," police said.

Investigators said they found a gun at the scene.

The Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating along with CMPD detectives. Kludy and Heater have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure in a shooting involving an officer.

Reyes’ next of kin has been notified of his death, police said.

Both Kludy and Heater were hired with CMPD in 2020.
