Police shot and killed a man who pointed a rifle at officers and others in Asheville Monday, according to the Asheville Police Department.

The shooting happened at about 5 p.m. on Chatham Road near Merrimon Avenue, police said.

Police said several people called to report a man pointing a rifle at them, and that he also assaulted a City of Asheville contract worker with a shovel.

"Officers arrived and ordered the man to drop his weapon, but he refused. The man pointed his rifle at officers and an officer-involved shooting occurred," police said.

The man barricaded himself inside his home, police said, where he was later found dead.

The State Bureau of Investigations is investigating.

The public is asked to avoid the area while the investigation continues. Police did not release the man's name.
