A brush fire broke out in Carteret County over the weekend, leading to an evacuation.
The fire threatened the area of Marina Road and Old Cedar Island Road in Atlantic, N.C., according to fire officials. Residents are asked to avoid the area unless they are evacuating.
As of Monday morning, roughly 520 acres have been impacted, according to information from the North Carolina Forest Service, and the fire was 75% contained.
At least 20 homes were voluntarily evacuated, said N.C. Forest Public Information Officer Philip Jackson. No injuries have been reported from the fire.
The National Weather Service shared radar and satellite images of the fire, courtesy of the College of DuPage.
The fire comes as the area experiences dry weather. Winds out of the east are also helping to fan the flames, according to Spectrum News 1 meteorologists.
No rain is in the forecast until later this week.
There is the potential for a tropical system somewhere along the southeast U.S. It's a low chance right now, meteorologists say, but that could potentially bring some relief to the dry conditions.
Breezy winds are pushing smoke well inland and as far west as the Greenville-Kinston area, according to Spectrum News 1 Meteorologist Vernon Turner.
Winds will shift Monday night and come out of the southeast, continuing to push smoke as far west as Rocky Mount. A light smell of smoke in the air, along with a light haze in the sky, may be present for areas downwind of the wildfire. Those with respiratory issues like asthma may want to limit time outside due to reduced air quality.
