CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Many dressed in uniform, and even more dressed in all black to attend Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas Weeks Jr.’s funeral Monday, like Melissa DeLong with Back the Blue NC, a nonprofit dedicated to honoring fallen officers and families.
“It’s important that these families and these departments see that there is support from the community,” she said.
Supporters came from near and far to say their final goodbyes.
"From what I've been able to read, he was a great down-home father. He loved his family. He loved God,” DeLong said. “My husband is in law enforcement himself. It touches my heart.”
As a corrections officer, her husband has been attacked twice. The fear of getting an even worse call lingers. So, her heart goes out especially to the wives of the fallen officers killed in the April 29 standoff in east Charlotte.
“I don’t want those calls any more than they do. And now they have received those calls. So, I know I can only support them by being there,” she said.
Admiring the strength of Weeks’ wife Kelly, DeLong says simply showing up goes a long way.
“I’ve gotten to know a lot of the families that we’ve helped with Back the Blue NC, and I can see the importance that having the community there with them has done for them,” she said. “The love, the signs, the flags. And somehow It makes it a little easier.”
Back the Blue NC has already raised more than $200,000 for families of the fallen law enforcement officers. DeLong said they also have a program called 10-33 — that’s the code if an officer needs assistance while on the job. They collect donations every month through that program for families of officers killed in the line of duty.
