Rachel Loyd joined Spectrum News 1 North Carolina in August 2021.
Although raised in the Chicagoland area, Rachel has ties to the South through her father, who grew up in South Carolina. She’s excited to be in North Carolina because of family, the rich food and the Carolina beaches. She feels that Charlotte also offers the best of both worlds - a big city balanced with southern flair.
After graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Rachel started her professional career as a first-grade teacher before getting her master’s degree at UC Berkeley and transitioning to journalism. She took her first role as a multimedia journalist in Fort Myers, Florida.
While in Fort Myers, Rachel was proud that her reporting made a real impact. While following up on a tip regarding construction mismanagement, she exposed a pattern of homeowners getting ripped off by a custom homebuilder. Rachel followed up and continued finding similar stories from even more building companies until state laws changed to protect homeowners. High-impact stories are why Rachel got into reporting, to better the circumstances of those whose stories she tells.
When she’s not working, you might find Rachel doing yoga, exploring the Queen City, or spending time with her brothers and friends.
