CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Lowe’s stores in the Charlotte area are giving away blue lightbulbs in a show of support for law enforcement after this week’s shootout that left four officers dead and four others wounded.
The home improvement chain said it hopes residents will install them on front porches in a gesture of solidarity with police.
“Our hearts are broken for the families of the fallen officers, their fellow law enforcement officers and the greater Charlotte community,” Lowe's regional vice president Sean Reilly said in a news release.
Lowe’s announced Friday that the outdoor LED bulbs will be available in checkout areas beginning Saturday until stock runs out. No purchase is needed.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department on Saturday expressed gratitude for the support received in the aftermath of the shooting.
CMPD Officer Joshua Eyer was among the four members of a U.S. Marshals Service task force killed Monday when a suspect opened fire as they sought to arrest him. Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas Weeks Jr. and N.C. Department of Adult Corrections Officers Sam Poloche and William “Alden” Elliott also were slain.
The suspect, Terry Clark Hughes, who was wanted in Lincoln County for possession of a firearm by a felon and two counts of felony flee to elude, was killed.
Eyer was buried Friday at Sharon Memorial Gardens Cemetery after an emotional funeral at First Baptist Church on South Davidson Street.
