Two fires along a trail at the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site appear to have been set intentionally over the weekend, according to National Park Service officials.

The Park Service is asking for the public's help to figure out who set the fires on the Freedom Trail, part of the historic site on Roanoke Island.

The Dare County Sheriff's Office alerted NPS to the fires at about 9 a.m. Sunday, officials said. Both fires burned less than a tenth of an acre, NPS said.

The Fort Raleigh National Historic Site is home to the first English settlement in the Americas and the Roanoke Island Freedmen's Colony. It is the site of the fabled Lost Colony and the outdoor theater where the play on the colony is performed each summer.

The Park Service asks anyone with information to call 252-473-2111.
