A shooting in a residence hall at N.C. Central University sent one person to the hospital Tuesday night and put the Durham campus on lockdown for about two hours, according to NCCU.

The shooting happened at about 10:15 p.m. in the Lawson Street Residence Hall, police said. There were already university police officers nearby doing safety checks and they were able to respond quickly to the reports of gunshots, the university said in a news release.

"City of Durham EMS happened to be on the scene attending to an unrelated medical call," the university said. The medics were able to start treating the shooting victim quickly and take the person to Duke University Hospital.

Neither the police nor the school released information about the suspect and if anyone had been arrested.

The university said it lifted the lockdown at about 12:20 a.m.

NCCU said counseling services would be available at the Lawson Street Residence Hall beginning Wednesday morning.
