Lexington Fire Captain Ronnie Metcalf died on Friday, three days after he was severely burned while fighting a house fire. A procession will take Metcalf's body from Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem to a funeral home in Thomasville Monday evening.
Firefighters went to a house fire at 306 W. 5th St. in Lexington just after midnight on March 26, according to the fire department. They saw fire and smoke coming from the back of the house, and firefighters went inside to try to put it out.
"A few minutes later, an order to evacuate the structure was issued," the fire department said. After they evacuated, the firefighters realized they were missing one of their own.
"Search teams reentered the structure to locate and extricate Metcalf. He was then treated by EMS at the scene for burn injuries and transported by helicopter to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital," the fire department said.
Metcalf, a 19-year veteran of the department, had burns to 60% of his body, the department said. He died three days after the fire.
Investigators are still working to figure out what caused the blaze.
