FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Things are better for many in the Woodlands neighborhood in Garner after a tornado hit the community and caused destruction Sunday, but one resident is still working to rebuild his home.

The EF1 tornado had max winds of 110 mph and stayed on the ground for four minutes, according to the National Weather Service.

What You Need To Know

  •  An EF1 tornado hit Garner Sunday, uprooting trees and causing damage to homes

  •  The Woodlands neighborhood continues to rebuild after the storm

  • Sixty homes were damaged and four of them were designated as being unsafe to live in

  • Crews from the city are still removing debris

"The damage was mostly snapped and uprooted trees, some of which fell on several homes," officials with NWS said

While a lot of the debris and destruction has been removed, for some of the people, the calamity is far from being finished.

Charlie Izzard's home was one of four houses that Garner inspectors declared unsafe to live in. Izzard has lived in the Woodlands community for more than 40 years.

On Thursday, Izzard and some friends were outside of the house trying to remove debris.

“A lot of memories,” he said. “But we’re going to build new memories. And we have each other.”

A large tarp covers the house now. And a sign on the front door from Garner declares it as unsafe for habitation. Izzard and his family are staying at a hotel and are looking for temporary housing. He’s determined to rebuild his home.
