A wanted man pulled a gun on officers with the U.S. Marshals Service before he was shot and killed, according to the federal agency.
Officers with the Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force were serving an arrest warrant on the 700 block of Broad Street in New Bern Friday when the shooting happened, the Marshals Service said.
The scene was a block from Tryon Palace, near New Bern's historic downtown district.
The Marshals Service said there were multiple arrest warrants for the man, including for drug charges.
The man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, the Marshals Service said. No officers were injured.
The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure when police or other law enforcement shoot suspects.
