CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police shot and killed a man near Uptown Charlotte Oct. 4 after, they say, the man pointed a gun at officers.
Authorities say they received a call about a man shooting a gun in the street around 9:30 p.m. near Frazier Avenue, which is just off West Trade Street.
A week after the shooting, the Charlotte-Meckleburg Police Department identified the officer as Braylin Brown. The man who died was 44-year-old Nicholas Demar Lopez.
When the officer found the man, he was carrying a gun, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
“The firearm was pointed at the officer on at least one or two occasions, and the officer repeatedly gave commands to drop the firearm,” CMPD Police Chief Johnny Jennings said in a video posted to social media. “At some point, the officer discharged his firearm as he perceived an imminent threat.”
Lopez was taken to the hospital, where police say he died from his injuries. The officer was taken to the hospital as precaution but is expected to be OK.
Police say the man's gun was found on the scene.
The State Bureau of Investigation is conducting a criminal investigation. CMPD says the department is also doing its own internal investigation.
