CARY, N.C. — The highly anticipated Downtown Cary Park is nearly complete.
While most of the major construction is finished, crews are working on the cosmetic side of the park before it opens.
The park has been in the works for more than 20 years, but the town finally set an opening day in November.
“We're taking our time because when we open, we want it to really be right for the citizens and the patrons that come,” Joy Ennis, the park's general manager, said.
Ennis has been working on the project for the past three and a half years and says it’s the opportunity of her career.
“I think the thing I'm looking forward to most is just watching the expression on people's face when they see it,” she said.
Ennis helped design the park and says surveys and focus groups were used to figure out what the community wanted in this space.
“They have told us they've never been in a community that has this much support and this much input for a project,” she said. “So we really feel like the community built this park because their input really, really informs what the design ended up being.”
Amenities include lawns for games, concerts and movies, a playground, splash pads, a dog park, and areas to get food and drinks. With so many people moving to the area, Ennis hopes this park will help the town keep up with the growth.
“I think that, you know, the time was right for this type a park in terms of Cary’s development,” she said. “The downtown had started to revitalize and, you know, the investment that the town has put into this park to continue that revitalization, I think, shows how Cary really is on the cutting edge…. We're hoping that everybody that comes will really enjoy this type of park. It's different and unique, and it's really a living thing.”
The Downtown Cary Park will open with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Nov. 19. On Dec. 2, Cary will kick the holiday season off with a day of activities and events.
