What You Need To Know

  • The Triangle is seeing at least 5,000 new movers a month

  • This is roughly a 12% increase compared to this time last year

  • Raleigh, Cary, Durham and Chapel Hill have all been dubbed "Zoom Towns"

“These are just new mover addresses and each address could have a family of four — so you do the numbers — it's a lot of people moving here,” said Bassam Safi, franchise owner of Our Town America.

One of the reasons the Triangle is seeing so much growth is because it has been dubbed a “Zoom Town,” as people move from bigger cities like New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles now that remote working is here to stay for many companies.

A recent study shows that 56% of all workers have the ability to do their jobs from home.

This influx of new residents has already benefited some businesses, especially doctors offices, since doctors are oftentimes one of the first things people set up when moving to a new place.

“We have been so busy. The new patient volume has really gone up over the last few weeks especially,” said Dr. Hesham Baky of Triangle Family Dentistry. “This really is such a high growth area — so many people are moving from up north, down south, and from the west and they're really coming to North Carolina — it’s one of the best places to live, and we're excited for all the growth we're about to have.”

The Triangle can also expect to see even more people move to the area following Apple’s announcement that it is opening its first East Coast campus in Wake County. The company is expected to bring 3,000 new jobs and the state commerce department estimates the project will generate nearly $2 billion in additional state revenues through 2061.
