CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Flames tore through part of Charlotte Preparatory School in Charlotte late Monday night, closing the campus until further notice and causing more than $2 million in damage.
The three-alarm fire sparked before 11:30 p.m. at Charlotte Prep’s lower school building, according to the Charlotte Fire Department.
No one was hurt, fire officials say, and it took around 60 firefighters an hour and a half to control the fire.

Charlotte firefighters tweeted video showing flames and smoke coming from the school.
Fire crews had to use aerial devices to extinguish the fire since they could not get inside the building.
The school, pre-K through eighth grade, is located on Boyce Road off Sardis Road.
The school has canceled camps and activities for the rest of the week.
“Do not come to campus until further notice,” Charlotte Preparatory School posted on its website.
Fire investigators plan to view security footage from neighbors in the area, and heavy equipment will be brought in to knock down walls of the building as the investigation continues.
The fire caused an estimated $2.5 million worth of damage, according to Charlotte Fire Department Captain Jackie Gilmore.
The cause of the fire has not been released.
