One person is dead after a police shooting just after midnight near downtown Greensboro, according to police.
Officers were called to the 1000 block of Tuscaloosa Street at about 12:15 a.m. Thursday about a suspicious vehicle, according to the Greensboro Police Department.
The officers found a person walking in the street, the department said. The person pulled out a gun as the officers drove toward them, police said, and an officer shot the person while still sitting inside their patrol car.
Police have not identified the person killed by the officer.
The department said the officers called for an ambulance and started to treat the person until help could get to the scene. The person was taken to a hospital and declared dead, police said.
The police department said it asked the State Bureau of Investigation to investigate the shooting. The department said it is also doing an internal investigation.
The officer has been placed on administrative duty, according to the Greensboro Police Department.
