FRISCO, N.C. – A teenager from Virginia died Saturday afternoon after a hole dug near a sand dune collapsed on him on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, the National Park Service said.
The 17-year-old boy from Chesapeake, Virginia, was buried under several feet of sand in a back-dune area not visible from the beachfront at about 2 p.m. in the small town of Frisco in Dare County, N.C., the park service stated in a news release.
Family and friends found the teen trapped under the sand after a dune apparently collapsed into the hole, the park service stated.
Rangers from Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Dare County first responders helped pull the teen out and performed CPR but could not revive him.
The park service and local officials have urged visitors not to dig large holes along the beach because of the danger of cave-ins or sea surges.

Last year, an 18-year-old and his sister were trapped when a hole on a New Jersey beach fell in. The girl was rescued, but the teen died.
“Cape Hatteras National Seashore offers our condolences to his family and friends," David Hallac, National Parks of Eastern North Carolina superintendent, stated in the news release. "We urge visitors not to dig deep holes on the beach due to the danger they present to beachgoers and emergency response staff.”
