CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Volvo SUV ran off a Charlotte interstate and crashed into an apartment complex generator early Saturday morning, knocking out power for hours.

Between midnight and 1 a.m., the vehicle veered off Interstate 277 just before the South Boulevard-Brooklyn Village exit. The car knocked down a gate and collided with a generator at the Savoy Apartment complex, according to police.

Justin Baines, a resident of Savoy Apartments, said the crash caused quite a disturbance.

“When I woke up, I just heard a whole bunch of crunching, like it was some mechanical crunching. Then I looked down and I saw the car right there. Thirty minutes later, there were a whole bunch of cops right here, ambulances, fire trucks. They were out here until like 5 in the morning,” Baines said.

Baines said he saw the driver of the SUV being taken away in an ambulance, and that power was out until 5 a.m.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has not responded to requests about the cause of the crash or the driver’s condition.
