GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Greensboro City Council awarded more than $586,000 of American Rescue Plan Act funding to eight nonprofits. 

The receiving organizations are all first-time recipients of city funds.

The Black Suite Initiative, a mentoring program that provides young men with community service and career-building opportunities, received $50,000. They will use the money to fund supplies and activities.

Founder Evaina Ross said she started the program to help disrupt cycles of poverty in the community and equip young men with skills to become "right now" leaders.

“Hopefully, they take what they have learned here and pass it on to their friends and family as well,” Ross said.

Positive Direction for Youth & Families and Guilford Child Development received about $135,000.

The city requires these programs to submit financial audits and reviews as part of their agreement. 

The council authorized a resolution to provide an additional $20,000 to each nonprofit to obtain an audit of their financial records.
