RALEIGH, N.C. — Every Thursday, dozens of N.C. State students line up outside the Student Union Center for a weekly event supporting mental health.
Some local parents created a group called "Free Moms."
What You Need To Know
- A group called "Free Moms" offers mental health support to N.C. State students each Thursday
- Four N.C. State students have died by suicide this academic year
- If you or someone you know is contemplating suicide, help is available by calling 988
Each Thursday, they give out free hugs and snacks to N.C. State students.
It's been an especially difficult academic year on campus. Four students died by suicide last semester, and another student was found dead inside his dorm room last month.
Spectrum News 1 talked to Becky Moore, a Free Moms organizer, whose child goes to the university.
"Just so heartbreaking any time we lose one of the kids. As a mom, I can't even imagine getting that call and hearing that your child has passed away. No parent should have to deal with that. My heart goes out to that family," Moore said.
Free Moms started three years ago with just one mom and has grown to include dads, siblings and even pets.
Moore has a student attending N.C. State as a freshman. She says he's a regular at the Free Mom's booth.
