RALEIGH, N.C. — The statewide “Booze It & Lose It” campaign is underway in North Carolina.

Law enforcement across the Tar Heel state will be increasing patrols as part of the holiday enforcement effort through Jan. 2.

The “Booze It & Lose It” holiday campaign is the largest impaired driving effort run by the N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program.

“If you’re out celebrating this holiday season, make sure you have a sober ride home,” said Mark Ezzell, director of the NCGHSP. “If you drive under the influence, you have a lot to lose. Not only could you kill yourself or someone else, but you could face thousands of dollars in court costs and fines, jail time, or a revoked license.”

Officials say 432 people have been killed so far this year in North Carolina as a result of drug and alcohol related accidents.

The NCGHSP says following these tips can help keep you and others safe on the roadways this holiday season:

  • Never driving impaired and always finding a safe ride home
  • Buckling your seatbelt when riding in any seat in the vehicle
  • Following the speed limit
