CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte family is demanding justice be served for their loved one, Shanquella Robinson. This comes nearly two months after Robinson was found dead in Mexico, just a few weeks before the Thanksgiving holiday.
What You Need To Know
On Oct 29, the body of Shanquella Robinson was found in Mexico
Mexican authorities later confirmed charges were filed against a woman in connection to Robinson's death
The family and organizers hosted a rally, demanding any party responsible for Robinson's death be brought to justice
The Queen City community rallied together Saturday afternoon, calling on investigators to hold any party responsible for Robinson's death, accountable.
The 'Justice for Shanquella Robinson Rally' took place at the Little Rock AME Zion Church in Uptown Charlotte.
It was hosted by the Million Youth March of Charlotte and Salisbury.
Over 100 people attended the event, honoring Robinson's memory, including her family members.
"This hurt, this hurt to the core," said Bernard Robinson, Shanquella Robinson's father. "She was my only child. She had so much going for herself."
During the rally, several speakers called on authorities to make arrests in this case, and ensure justice is fully served for Robinson.
On Oct. 29, Mexican authorities say Robinson was found dead at a resort development in San Jose del Cabo.
Spectrum News 1 confirmed, an autopsy determined Robinson died of severe spinal cord or neck injury.
Mexican prosecutors later confirmed they filed charges against a U.S. woman in this case, but did not confirm the woman's name.
Since Robinson's death, there have been lot of questions raised about whether an arrest has been made in this case.
At the time of her death, Robinson was traveling within a group in Mexico. The victim's family says the people Robinson was traveling with provided inconsistent stories about what led to her death.
During a news conference earlier this week, the family said they cannot comment on specific details of the case, but further said justice will only be served when any responsible parties are extradited and prosecuted in Mexico. Toward the end of the press conference, one family member stated to the media "nobody has been arrested."
They're hoping the rally will spark more action and bring some amount of closure for their family.
In the meantime, some supporters are devoting more of their time to support the Robinsons' justice efforts.
Bliyas Event Planning and Decor owner Nikia McCray attended Saturdays rally. Her company also provided free 'Justice for Shanquella Robinson' pins to the attendees.
"I made around 300," McCray said. "Awareness needs to be made, this should not have happened to her."
McCray says she'll continue wearing her pins until justice is served.
"She did not deserve this," McCray said.
The FBI Office in Charlotte is also investigating this case.
Spectrum News 1 has reached out to the Mexican Prosecutor's Office, the FBI, and the U.S. Department of State for confirmation on whether anyone has been arrested in connection with Robinson's death. As of now, that specific question has not been answered.
