GREENSBORO, N.C. — A traffic stop turned deadly Sunday night after Greensboro police say a suspect tried to ram officers with a vehicle and shots were fired. Greensboro police identified the suspect killed as a 17-year-old, and said two other teens were inside the vehicle during the shooting.
Police initiated a traffic stop around 9:08 p.m. on W. Market Street, according to the department, but the vehicle took off as the officer approached.
Several people inside the vehicle fled after it was stopped a second time.
While trying to stop the vehicle, police say the driver, whose name has not been released because he is underage, used the vehicle to hit the patrol car and then accelerated.
That is when the officer fired their gun. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Greensboro police.
In an update Monday afternoon, Greensboro police said there was a 15-year-old and 17-year-old inside the vehicle when the shooting happened. Authorities said they are still trying to learn the identities of the others in the vehilce who ran before shots were fired.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating, and the Greensboro Police Department says it will conduct an internal investigation to determine whether department policies were properly followed.
The officer involved has been placed on administrative duty pending the investigation, which is standard protocol after an officer is involved in a shooting.
