CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A suspect at the center of a lengthy police pursuit that spanned across Charlotte Wednesday is facing charges, police say.

The situation, referred to by CMPD Police Chief Johnny Jennings as "very dangerous," started with a burglary call involving a stolen Jeep. The pursuit eventually ended at South Boulevard and East Boulevard when a stolen SUV crashed into a pick-up truck.

The suspect, whose name has not been publicly released, stole four vehicles in total in an attempt to flee from officers, police said.

The fourth vehicle was stolen in a carjacking, authorities said, and due to the police department's pursuit policy, officers weren't able to pursue the suspect.

Jennings said officers were unable to use stop sticks because the suspect’s unpredictable routes interfered with planning the placement of the sticks.

Officers say they didn't lose sight of the suspect thanks to aviation and coverage of the events.

Wednesday's situation did not involve an armed robbery, but police began to pursue the fourth stolen vehicle because they believed another person was inside the SUV. Officers later learned no one was inside the vehicle.

The pursuit ended in a crash in Charlotte's South End, where the suspect surrendered to police.

"This is absolutely appalling that someone would have this much disregard for the general public," Jennings said.

He described the incident as a "no-win situation," and also said that police pursuit could have elevated the danger to the public.

“The CMPD pursuit policy prohibited us from chasing the suspect up until the point when the suspect carjacked the last vehicle, not knowing if an abduction had taken place," Jennings said in a statement

“Unless it’s a crime dangerous to life, we do not pursue those vehicles,” Jennings said in a press conference, saying it’s unusual for a person to continue driving erratically once police pull away from the vehicle. However, “this individual continued to drive erratically and put the lives of our citizens in danger,” Jennings said.

The police chief says officers followed the pursuit policy “precisely.”

The suspect will likely face multiple counts of auto theft and multiple counts of hit and run, according to Jennings.

A woman involved in part of the incident may also be facing charges.

The owner of one of the stolen vehicles spoke to media outlets, and said she was worried about the danger to the public and the lives put at risk.

"Think before you do something foolish like that because it's gonna change his life," she said.
