The forlorn sound of "Taps" came from a bugle as four Marines killed in an aviation accident in Norway in March were honored in a ceremony at Camp Lejeune Monday.
The men, all assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 261, Marine Aircraft Group 26, 2d Marine Aircraft Wing stationed on Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina, were identified as after their deaths in earlier this spring:
- Capt. Matthew J. Tomkiewicz, 27, of Fort Wayne, Indiana
- Capt. Ross A. Reynolds, 27, of Leominster, Massachusetts
- Gunnery Sgt. James W. Speedy, 30, of Cambridge, Ohio
- Cpl. Jacob M. Moore, 24, of Catlettsburg, Kentucky
The marines were killed March 18 in an Osprey aircraft near Bodo, Norway during a training flight.
The Camp Lejeune ceremony happened at 10 a.m. Monday, and Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 261 and 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing (MAW) honored the fallen marines' legacies and memories with speakers presenting eulogies, readings and reflections.
"We are deeply saddened by their loss. Our deceased Marines will never be forgotten, and our condolences remain with their families and friends," 2nd Lt. Jacob Ballard said in a news release.
