Dominick Amendum was nominated for a Grammy in 2021

Amendum and his students are working on the "SpongeBob Musical "

Amendum is a Broadway musical director, and he worked on shows like "Wicked" and "Prince of Egypt"

Dominick Amendum is an artist in residency at UNCG and a coordinator for the musical theatre program. He returned to his roots of the school after graduating in 2001.

"The teaching process is tedious, but it’s some of the most fun work to create. And that’s no different in the profession, like when I’m out in the world working versus what I do here at the university. The goal is to make the experience exactly the same for the students," Amendum said.

The work he’s doing at UNCG mirror’s what he does on Broadway.

"The hope is when our students go out into the world, they are just going to ease into 'the real-world scenario,' like nothing has changed, and they will know exactly what to expect."

Hopefully making it big, like Amendum, who was nominated for a Grammy for his work on the "Prince of Egypt" soundtrack in 2021.

"I woke up watching the Grammy Awards as a child, that is what I watched growing up, so to get a Grammy nomination after training as a musician for so long was just the top."

He hopes to instill that same focus into his students, so they have the skills to reach for their dreams.

"Something that we input to our students, you know it is such a gift to be on stage, singing, dancing and acting and bringing joy and a story to the public."

Amendum and his students are working on the biggest musical since the COVID-19 pandemic for the program "SpongeBob Musical." It will hit the stage in April.
