WAKE COUNTY, N.C. — One person is dead after an ambulance crashed in Knightdale Friday morning, officials say. Two Emergency Medical Service (EMS) workers involved were rescued and taken to the hospital.
The accident happened before 6:30 a.m. along Interstate 87.
Officials say the ambulance went off the road and down an embankment. One person, identified only as the patient, died following the crash, according to Highway Patrol.
The ambulance was pulled from the embankment a short time after the crash.
A winter storm is moving in and officials are warning that driving conditions could be hazardous, with the possibility of slick spots.
"For the Triangle area and eastward, please avoid driving unless absolutely necessary," the North Carolina Department of Transportation tweeted Friday morning.
