Ashe County Schools will also learn remotely Friday.
"Ashe County Schools will have a remote instruction day on Friday, Jan. 7 due to freezing temperatures, below zero wind chills and winter weather conditions," the district posted. "Travel is predicted to be hazardous." The district also dismissed early Thursday in preparation of wintry weather conditions.
Avery County Schools is closed Friday, "due to current conditions and declining temperatures overnight potentially creating dangerous travel conditions in the morning," the district posted Thursday night. Friday is an optional workday for teachers. Staff may report at 10 a.m.
Any lingering snow will draw to a close, Spectrum News1 meteorologists say, and sunshine will return. Highs will struggle to get above freezing around Asheville Friday, and only reach into the low to mid-20s in much of the High Country.
Lows will head down into the teens for much of the area, and some of the highest mountain spots could again see upper single digits.
Our next system arrives later Sunday, and it looks like mainly rain.
